Gina Carano Is Feature-Worthy

August 4, 2009

I appreciate the New York Time’s latest attempt to cover MMA fairly. They’ve had their moments in the past that made even MDS get riled up. With just over a week until the first ever women’s title fight that anyone knew about, the NYT did a feature on Gina Carano.

There’s really only one “dig” as a super-serious MMA fan like myself would take it –

Inside the cages where mixed martial arts competitors combine elements of kickboxing, wrestling and jujitsu in a manner banned in New York for its brutality

Fucking New York.

It’s a basic piece that is written like the audience has no clue about the subject being covered. And it’s half written like the author has no clue about the subject being covered. It’s really a fine line at the Times. Anyway, I learned some new stuff about Carano and it’s worth a read. (She wasn’t allowed to celebrate Halloween growing up?) It won’t exactly get you hyphy for next weekends’ Strikeforce event, but it’s worth 5 minutes of your time.
