So Much For Affliction

July 24, 2009

Stick a fork in Affliction. With Josh Barnett out of his title fight with Fedor Emelianenko and no suitable replacement available on short notice, Affliction has scrapped their entire card. That’s right, 8 days before their third (and maybe final) show they gave up.

Just a couple weeks ago some people were arguing that this card might be better on paper than UFC 100. Now, one fighter fails a random drug test and they’ve called the whole thing off. This sucks. Maybe its just me, but I was looking forward to Affliction: Trilogy. I’d watch Fedor fight a bear. Or Jeff Monson. I like Babalu. I’ve heard great things about Vitor. Paul Buentello looked good in both his Affliction fights. This was a good card. I was ready to pay for it. No matter who they put in the ring with Fedor.

It’s an amazing failure to just throw their arms up and say “Fuck it.” Then again, it’s not my millions of dollars on the line. If they had cavernously deep pockets they could have thrown 7 figures at Brett Rogers to get a worthy opponent. (As worhty as Fedor’s opponenets come at least.) Or Bobby Lashley. Hell, I saw him beat up like 7 guys when I was flipping through channels last night. Jeff Monson was willing to fight Fedor in exchange for an all-expense paid trip to Old Country Buffet for his children. Christ, Monson would have sat in the car.

So much for a spectacular month for MMA. Look at all we’ve got left in August…

1st – Affliction
8th – UFC 101
9th – WEC 42
15th – Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg
29th – UFC 102

Damn it! I have a wedding to attend on the 8th. I guess I didn’t realize how much I was looking forward to Affliction. You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. Well, I guess I’ll get over it.

Just look at that schedule. It’s stacked. I didn’t even mention an M-1 event on the 28th because it’s on HDNet which Time Warner doesn’t have anymore. Part of me really hates Time Warner, but that’s not the point. With a schedule like this in August, no one is even going to miss the Affliction card.

Have to wait and see if they try and reschedule. If Affliction is dead, he’ll talk.

im sure he danced a jig as soon as the news hit the wire. if they close up shop this gives fedor even less leverage…who is he gonna sign with elite xc? if dana could convince him that the road to a huge payday is through the ufc he will sign. brock and fedor would be bigger than brock-mir 2. if i was dana i would let fedor sign a one fight deal…let the money he makes with the fight with brock be the bait. once he sees the cash flow he will be convinced to sign on for more fights. at least thats my opinion

The time is now for Brock-Fedor. Now, now, fucking now. What a perfect opportunity. It is indeed a bummer that Affliction tapped out as I too was really looking forward to seeing Fedor again. Damn what a weird, wild week. This ranks up there with Elite XC’s demise.
There’s been talk of an Affliction/Strikeforce merge w/Strikeforce retaining its name. Slight chance Fedor winds up there but it’s time for Dana to set aside his celebratory freakout session and dig deep in the ol’ pockets. Real fucking deep.
