Fedor-Barnett Canceled

July 22, 2009

According to Sherdog, Josh Barnett failed a drug test and he won’t be sanctioned for his Affliction: Trilogy fight with Fedor Emelianenko. That’s right, the God damned headliner looks like it’s going to be scrapped a mere 10 days before the event. With more than a week to go and presumably Afflictions entire future riding on the level of sucess of next weekends’ show, they’re going to have to find someone else to fight Fedor.

Cage Potato says Vitor Belfort is the leader in the clubhouse. He’s currently gearing up for a MIDDLEWEIGHT bout on the same card. I guess he can go have a hearty dinner tonight. Fedor isn’t a big heavyweight, so it’s not a huge stretch to expect the former UFC Light Heavyweight champ fatten up in the next week and a half.

Another name mentioned was Bobby Lashley who understandably doesn’t want anything to do with Fedor. Personally, I’d like to see Brett Rogers, but he wasn’t even in talks to step in for Strikeforce the following week.

This sucks. Yet another astericks next to Fedor’s latest fights. We all thought he was beating legitimate guys on the Affliction banner. Then Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski were embarassed in less than 30 seconds combined in the last month. Barnett was supposed to be his toughest opponent to date. Now he’s out and he’s going to be taking on someone on short notice.

It’s like we’ll never know how good Fedor is and when his peak was. His differences with the UFC will probably never end. Dana White is too stubborn and Fedor’s handlers are too sketchy. He’s 32 and hasn’t been punched in what seems like 5 years. Next Saturday shouldn’t be any different. Unless…

Is Seth Petruzelli available?
