Liddell-Franklin? And Yet Another Blockbuster Idea

June 25, 2009

chuck-lidell-espnSure, I was the only one that was actually willing to give him the title shot, but still. I’m sure someone inside the UFC would have eventually come around and moved Ace ahead of Shogun. Hell, my idea even fits with the timetable of the newest rumor.

The rumor I speak of is that Franklin’s next fight will be at UFC 103 in September against Chuck Liddell. I would say this is another head-scratcher, but its not. Liddell wouldn’t come back to fight some young guy. Franklin is one of the only guys from the old guard Chuck has never fought.

Other than that, I don’t see what this does for either fighter. Liddell can’t beat Rich Franklin. Rich Franklin certainly isn’t going to move up in the standings with a win over Liddell. Franklin needs to fight another contender.

Cage Potato suggests Chuck-Randy IV.

As pointless as it sounded a couple months ago, maybe Liddell vs. Couture IV would be the most fitting sendoff. No matter what the outcome, it would leave fans with memories of Chuck’s past glories, not another depressing image of how far he’s fallen.

Would Randy move down to 205 at this point in his career? He hasn’t fought at 205 since Chuck “retired” him for the first time more than 3 years ago. Maybe Chuck could take on Dan Henderson or Wanderlei Silva in a rematch? I just don’t want to see the guy get killed out there. Especially after what happened in his last fight.

If Chuck wants to fight, the UFC better let him. Again, better in the UFC than giving a viewing surge to some other promotion. (I hear Affliction is looking for someone to fight Paul Buentello. I’m sure Chuck could put on a pound or two and make a heavyweight debut.) In addition to not letting anyone else use Liddell, the UFC kind of needs all the names it can get right now. They’ve got something like 15 shows between now and New Years.

How about this – Liddell-Randy IV could headline the TUF 10 finale. Even if Randy gets banged up against Big Nog, he could be back at full strength by the December finale. You’ve got a lot of eyes tuning in for possibly the last fight of both men’s careers. No worries about whether or not Kimbo in that case.

I want to see this so bad it’s not even funny. Chuck has one last shot and this would be a good way to go out.

You see that Dan Henderson is going on Rome tomorrow? WTF?
