Machida vs. Shogun? Really?

June 23, 2009

ShogunRuaI understand that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was considered the best 205-pounder in the world just 2 short years ago. Sure the only 3 loses in his career have come against Babalu, Forrest Griffin and UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman before Coleman was a shriveled up Vin Diesel. I understand he’s just getting back to full strength after major knee surgery. I understand that all the top contenders are scheduled to fight in the next 2 months. I get all that.

But to give Shogun a title fight against Lyoto Machida? Good lord. He beat Mark Coleman and Chuck Liddell. That’s the equivalent of going through the Celebrity TUF house for a title shot. The Coleman win was the worst fight to ever be awarded Fight of the Night. (Just a guess. It’s got to be top-5.) Chuck… Well, Chuck has seen better days. He had dropped 3 of 4 before the Shogun fight. He retired after the fight.

If anyone else was available, Shogun wouldn’t have this shot. Also, I’m not trying to say that Shogun won’t earn a shot in the future. Hell, he could win and hold the belt for a while. He’s only turning 28 in November. I don’t see any reason to rush him to the top of the UFC. Here’s what the UFC should do.

Machida could fight Rich Franklin at UFC 102 and co-headlines with Randy-Nogueira. (Franklin would have to be cleared medically.) Franklin-Machida would be a super fight. The UFC loves super fights. (Who doesn’t?) Machida is one of the 3 people to ever beat Franklin. Another thing to keep in consideration – Franklin turns 35 in October. He’s getting up there, but his career speaks for itself. The window for Rich Franklin’s prime could start to close at any time. If there’s anyone that should be rushed to the front of the line at this point, it’s Rich Franklin. (Again, Franklin is currently on medical suspension – possibly until December.)

Some other LHW possibilities for August are Luiz Cane who has won 3 straight. Both Cane and Rua won at UFC 97. I’d rather see Cane fight Shogun to move up the ladder than rush either into a bout with Machida.

Then you build UFC 103 around Diego Sanchez and Frank Edgar for a title shot at the end of the year against the Penn-Florian winner.

UFC 104 should be built around whoever walks away from UFC 100 healthiest. Or they could save Machida to headline this one.

By UFC 105 it should be November and time to head back to the UK. Assuming Michael Bisping beats Dan Henderson (I say definitely) he could headline against Anderson Silva in England for the middleweight title.

The end of the year show – presumably UFC 106 – features whichever titleholder from UFC 100 didn’t fight at UFC 104, plus Rampage-Rashad and the lightweight title fight between Florian-Penn and Edgar-Sanchez.

On top of all that, you can schedule Thiago Silva or Luiz Cane against Shogun and put it on any of those cards. Shogun wins, he could fight the UFC 102 winner for the belt at UFC 106 or 107.

That’s how I would set up the next 6 months for the UFC – health permitting. This could work people.

He’d be the first guy to jump from Affliction to the UFC. I’m ready for Babalu to return. He’s served his sentence.

babalu is the perfect gate keeper for whatever division he lands in. he is good but not good enough to fuck with the best in the world.

unlucky machida fan, the dragon got slayed in the first round, by a counter overhand right, then got his eye pounded on. gutted.
