Diego Sanchez vs. Clay Guida Video

June 23, 2009

The link at least. Go ahead and watch it. Score the rounds. I’ve asked my internet friends clown and mrejr8234 (Of comment section fame) to score along with me. When you watch make sure to keep the following criteria in mind:

Guida easily takes grappling and octagon control. Both fighters were extremely aggressive throughout the fight and round. Effective striking would have to go to Sanchez. If Guida opens up a cut instead on Sanchez with the same strikes being landed by both fighters, I don’t think there’s any question that was Guida’s round.

All three judges scored the second round for Guida. The fight was a split decision and no two judges scored the fight the same. Cageside they had the fight like this:

28-29 Guida,
29-27 Sanchez
29-28 Sanchez

Watching from the comfort of our respective homes, here’s how myself and two of my most esteemed readers scored it:

CRM – 10-9 Sanchez, 10-9 Guida, 10-9 Guida = 29-28 Guida

clown – 10-8 Sanchez, 10-9 Guida, 10-9 Guida = 28-28 Draw

mrejr8234 – 10-8 Sanchez, 10-9 Sanchez, 10-9 Sanchez = 30-27 Sanchez

So, that’s still a split decision victory for Sanchez. Just goes to show how close the fight was. As well as how different people can watch the exact same fight and see it in three almost completely different ways. Hell, MMAjunkie threw up their arms and scored the 3rd round 10-10 because it was so close.

Maybe the most impressive aspect of either fighter’s performance Saturday was the fact that Sanchez could not finish Guida no matter what he did. While the blood he was spilling looked impressive (and I think the blood is what lost him the decision), you have to wonder how much damage Sanchez actually inflicted after the first round.

In regards to the first round, I would have gone 10-9. 10-8’s are so rare. I think getting an 8 should be more of a punishment. If you finish the round and never back down, I don’t see how you can get an 8. 10-8’s are for fighters who spend the round running away or literaly just lying on the canvas covered up. That’s why I gave Guida the full 9.

So did anyone else score it differently?

alot of people are swayed by the fact that guida was bouncing up and down at the end of the fight. this fight had a moment in it i rarely see in fights. a fighter in guard covering up because he couldnt advance his position and was getting blasted from the bottom fighter. if there is a rematch sanchez will destroy guida

I thought it was a draw to be honest. I think the reason that Sanchez got the win was because he came out like a bull in a china shop to start the fight. He also had the most damage that was showing.

But you have to give the mongoloid some credit, he took a beating and just kept on coming. I can’t recall watching one of his fights where he got knocked out (although I’m sure there are a few).

He grew up in the same area that I did.

Guida’s been submitted, but never knocked out. That said, I wasn’t surprised or angry when the decision went to Sanchez. He obviously earned it.

Good write up, but I think it’s nuts to score that second round for Guida. Not only did Diego land more strikes, he landed more powerful strikes. Guida did nothing with that takedown, he didn’t even pass guard in well over 4 minutes on top. I don’t really even think you can argue that Guida had a dominant position; how can a position be considered dominant when you aren’t able to out strike your opponent. I feel like Diego won the round for sure

Keep up the good work, enjoy the blog.
