Previewish – UFC 99: The Comeback – Mostapha Al-turk vs. Mirko Filipovic

June 11, 2009

When there are UFC events, I’m going to do short previews for every single fight on the card individually. It’ll be a great chance to try and get to know the lesser known guys that fill out the spaces in the PPV shows that are created after quick stoppages. Sometimes, they make the PPV worth the buy.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (24-6-2 (1)) vs. Mostapha Al-turk (6-4)

mustapha_al_turkAl-turk debuted and was quickly dispatched at UFC 92 against Cheick Kongo. Before running into Kongo, he was the Cage Rage heavyweight champion and had won 6 of 7 fights in the organization. All his wins came via 1st round stoppages. Now he’s getting put in the octagon against a legendary KO artist.

When Mirko Cro Cop first came to the UFC, he was one of the most feared men in the world. Then he ran into Gabe Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo in back-to-back fights. Next thing you know, he was out of the UFC and everyone assumed the Croation law enforcement officer was washed up. A couple decent performances in Japan and he’s back. Dana White negotiated Cro Cop’s one fight return over the phone – the first verbal deal he’s ever done. If Cro Cop wins, he should be back in the hunt and around for a little while.

Whoever wins this fight is back on track and the hype will start to build again. Though to be fair, the window on both fighters is closing. Cro Cop is 34, Al-turk 35. I see Cro Cop putting together another run towards the top and starting with Al-turk.
