Previewish – UFC 99: Comeback – John Hathaway vs. Rick Story

June 8, 2009

When there are UFC events, I’m going to do short previews for every single fight on the card individually. It’ll be a great chance to try and get to know the lesser known guys that fill out the spaces in the PPV shows that are created after quick stoppages. Sometimes, they make the PPV worth the buy.

John “The Hitman” Hathaway (10-0) vs. Rick “The Horror” Story (7-2)

Welterweight Division – 170lbs

johnhathawayHathaway (pictured) is an undefeated British fighter who won his UFC debut at UFC 93 defeating Tom Egan in Ireland. With UFC 99 taking place in Germany, Hathaway is one of 6 Brits on the card. Hopefully it turns out better than the last time the Brits were in Germany. (That might have been a WWI joke, but I’m not exactly a history buff.)

Story will be making his UFC debut Saturday. He was a possible replacement for Karo Parisyan at UFC 94, but Parisyan loaded up on pain-killers and fought anyway. Turns out the pain-killers were the “banned” type and “The Heat’s” decision victory turned into a No Contest.  “The Horror” is on a 6 fight win streak and has a fresh 4-fight deal with the UFC.

Story has come a long way from going 0-17 as a freshman collegiate wrestler at Southern Oregon University. That might be the most impressive stat in the history of the UFC. Talk about sticktoitiveness. Here’s one of Story’s MySpace pics. As you can see, the ring girls always look classy in the smaller organization. I’m surprised she’s not wearing jorts.
